In a previous post, I answered the question, "What is free advertising?" Today I will attempt to outline a few key differences between free advertising & paid advertising.
One of the obvious differences is that you pay nothing for free advertising and paid advertising requires some type of cash transaction. No-brainer right?
What you probably don't know is that you can actually get more exposure and music sales with free advertising. How is this possible? Well, one technique for getting major free advertising is getting an album review by a magazine, newspaper, website, etc. Let's say the music editor at the Vibe does a review on your album. Let's also say you had some money to spend and you took out a full page ad in the Vibe as well.
You are going to get a better response from the review than from the ad. Why? Because the magazine editor is the one with the credibility. So if you paid $5,000, $10,000, or even $20, 000 for a nice flashy, colorful ad that only runs once in Vibe, then you're not really getting your full money's worth. If you get a review of your music published by the editor, people are more likely to read the review and buy your music. People buy faster on someone's recommendation versus picking up an album from someone they've never heard before.
Here's a good example of this: You need the brakes on your car done and you need a good mechanic. You don't know any but your friend recently had her brakes repaired and was very pleased with the work the mechanic did. She recommends her mechanic for the job and you give him your business because his referral came from a good source...a source you trust.
The funny thing is on the way to your friends mechanic you passed by several auto repair shops who had big beautiful advertising.
Why didn't you stop at those along the way?
Because you had a good referral.
It's the same way with magazine editors. In their music review they are basically giving you a referral. They want to give good information to their readers who subscribe their magazine. Those subscribers trust the magazine or else why would they be reading it?
And whether the review is good or bad it doesn't matter. All publicity is good publicity.
To me this is 10 times better than running an ad. And if you did it correctly, it didn't cost you an arm and a leg to generate all this targeted exposure.
So the question is would you rather spend loads of cash paying for advertising and get minimal returns or do the work necessary to get free advertising and get massive exposure?
In my opinion, free advertising wins every time.
Let's make it happen!!!
